Speaking at a population oral health symposium on 26 Oct, Director-General of Health Professor Kenneth Mak said tooth loss can lead to poor nutrition and age-related muscle loss, affecting older people's quality of life and independence. He noted that only about 35 per cent of people aged 65 and above still have 21 or more natural teeth, and cited a study finding that adults over 60 with 20 to 32 natural teeth can expect more than five more years of independent living than those with none.
